Top 10 Exam Tips for Parents

The Final year exam is just around the corner..

As parents, we may the ones experiencing butterflies inside, while our kids sit for the exam..

I've sourced out for some great Tips and found this to be helpful..Enjoy!

( Source: http://bit.ly/HsOIc )

TOP TEN EXAM TIPS FOR PARENTS

1. DON’T NAG
“It doesn’t help,” says ChildLine counsellor Maggie Turner. “Keep your
expectations out of it, kids have enough of their own. And stay calm. Fear and anger are catching.

2. SET GOALS AND BOUNDARIES
Agree a revision schedule and offer to tape their favourite TV shows for
watching later. Treats are essential. It helps give them a purpose for getting revision done.

3. OFFER TEA AND SYMPATHY
They could be your biggest contribution. Take them drinks and make sure
they take regular breaks. Offer to test them. Stop them working if they seem over tired.

4. TRY AROMA-MEMORY
Pick an oil your child has not used before, one known to improve alertness, such as basil, lime, or peppermint. Use it in a burner while revising. Keep a different oil for each subject. When the exam comes along put a drop of the same oil on a tissue or sleeve cuff. Sniff discreetly and it will help yourmemory recall the information.

5. FEED THEIR MINDS
Sugar may give an “energy hit” but it increases stress levels. Give them a
bowl of seeds, nuts and dried fruit to eat while studying. Encourage them to drink milk instead of coffee, it’s very calming. Serve them small, regular meals including things like potatoes, pasta, rice, fish and chicken. Make them drink plenty of water. It’s good for the brain.

6. BUILD UP THEIR CONFIDENCE
Maggie Turner says: “Some kids don’t revise through sheer terror. Then if
they fail they can blame it on the fact they didn’t revise. Build up their
confidence by reminding them of things they’ve done well in, in the past.
Others find revision a difficult concept to grasp. Encourage them to see their teacher to develop revision skills."

7. LOOK FOR SIGNS OF STRESS
Stressed youngsters might be off their food – or overeating. They may be irritable, withdrawn, silent, have difficulty sleeping or be waking early. It’s important to keep a good relationship so they can talk to you about their worries. If necessary get professional help. Most schools have counsellors.

8. HELP THEM RELAX
“Relaxation techniques are very effective,” says Jennie Kramer who teaches stress management at Callington Community College in Cornwall. “Put on some nice music, get them to lie down, close their eyes and breathe deeply while visualising a calming scene such as a deserted beach. Visualising success can really raise self-confidence too.”

9. PAMPER THEM
Use essential aromatherapy oils to help them beat stress with a relaxing
massage or bath. Aromatherapist Valerie Anne Worwood suggests mixing
chamomile roman (5 drops) mandarin (2 drops) oremnis flower (3 drops)
geranium (3 drops) in 30ml of almond oil.

10. KEEP THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE
If you are stressed too, console yourself by talking to parents who have been through exam hell. Remind yourself – and your child – that exams aren’t the be-all and end-all. Always reassure them that however well or badly they do,you will still love them.

When I am Down & Beaten ...Who am I Without You...

When I am Down and Beaten in this Path of Graveled Road

I Raise my Head to Witness the Dust that has Gathered around these Scratches and Wounds

I see the Road less Traveled Ahead, Winding to an Endless Pits of Darkness..

Voices of doubts Whisper to me in this Dead Moments of Silence...

Wondering, Questioning, If I should have Wandered as a this Dreamer to Thread this Path of No Man's Land..

Wouldn't it have been Safe to Stay in the Warm Safety of the Comfort Nest where all the Flocks Gather?

Where I could just Wake up, Fly for the Early Worms and Retire to the Night for another day of Precise Routine which Spells Comfort & Security...

Why Venture into this Risky Road of the Unknown, Darkness that knows no ends, Pain that knows no Threshold, Pressure that knows no Limit..

I've heard of men & women who have walked this path...

I've heard how they Fell

I've heard some Quit..

I've heard some Triumph..

Alas, I am aware, yet I know not why I walk this path...

I am but a Dreamer.. Dreaming of a Life beyond the shackles of conformity..

A Rebel of Norms, challenging patterns of life stamped on me from all except me..

In my dreams, I see flickers of light from a far...

I see Rainbows after the Storm

I see Nature and its Lessons in Polarity..

I see the Sun rise after a Night Blanket of darkness..

I see Caterpillars Metamorphosing into Freedom Flying Butterflies

I know, it's just Laws of Nature...

For Nature Creates in Harmony, so will I, for I am part of Nature and HIS Creation..subject to the same Universal Laws of Life..

When I am down & beaten.. I hear a song...a far away tune...

The Song goes...

"You are Special! Staying Stuck & Down won't Allow you to Serve & Contribute Your Brilliance... The world needs to See You Move... Hear You Sing Your Tunes of Hope... Dance to the Flow of Life... Inspire through Your Renewed Energy! Heal your Broken Wings & Soar like the Phoenix to the Land of Infinite Possibilities.."

Ask Suria Weight Loss Question "I eat right, I exercise and I still cant lose weight.. Helppp!"

Dear Aspiring Slimmers..

This week on “Ask Suria Weight Loss Question”

Weight Loss Question from Rafeah Ahmad:
"Hai Suria, Need your advice. I've been eating like usual & not forget to do exercise every week but I just wonder why my weight can increased drastically?”

My Answers:

This week my answer will focus on 3 ways to know that you are successful in your weight loss efforts WITHOUT looking at the weighing scales...

In my Anggun Weight Loss workshop, I cover this in detail, in fact there are 10 ways to know if you are really losing weight MINUS the weighing scale...

Let's first banish the TOP MOST COMMON Misconception about weight loss...

The mistake we make is to associate weight loss success to Kg lost.

Losing weight is not just about kilograms lost, its beyond that

Basic weight loss 101
Our body is made up of
- Water
- Muscles
- Fats
- Bones
- Organs

Truly the fastest way to lose "kg weight" is to break all the bones off the body, believe me you will be weighing much much lesser!

Hey crazy, of course we wont break our bones just to be lighter right, that doesn't make sense...

Anyone can promise you anything, lose 30kg in 30 days!!

But wait....

Kg of WHAT??
You may be losing water...or worst your muscles...and your fats still intact in your body!!

Have you heard of skinny fat people? People who look slim, but have a higher body fats percentage than they are supposed to have..

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT I AM LOSING?
You can check using a Karada weighing scale which can measure your weight, your total body fats and even your muscles in your body. That way you know exactly what you are losing weekly..

What is more important is that you are losing your weight from your fats and not just water or your muscles...

BAD NEWS
Losing muscles is very very bad news, as it will slower your metabolic rate and make you yo yo faster and pile more weight than before!! Its a dieters worst nightmare! ( More on this topic in the future... )

Now lets get back to our topic...how to know you are successful even without using the weighing scale

3 POWER TIPS

1. Check your Size
Are you wearing a smaller size now? Pants getting loose? You can fit into your old clothes. If so Say YES!!

2. Your Stamina and Energy Level
Are you feeling more energetic now? Do you feel lighter? Do you feel that you have more energy and stamina? Maybe in the past you would start panting just walking a few steps, but now you can even run up the stairs with ease. If so Say YES!!

3. Is your skin getting Toned/Firmer now?
In the past perhaps you have flabby skin but now since you are also doing toning exercises, you see that your skin is getting more taut.. If so Say YES!!

Now you don't need the weighing scale to be able to determine all of the above.

PUT ON WEIGHT? DON'T WORRY .. BE HAPPY...
And even if you do put on weight, you need to be sure what weight is that..if its muscles weight that you have gained then great...no worries..

THROW AWAY THE SCALES!
If you are eating according to your Body Formula and exercising with the right techniques, then you are on the right track. Chuck away the weighing scale for now... focus on Health and not weight, Focus on a getting an ideal body from a positive mindset of loving yourself, of wanting to be healthy, nourish your body and live a Great healthy life because YOU LOVE YOURSELF...

You don't need any more weighing scales ever! Even if you need to, only check once in 2 weeks, NOT everyday!

Fyi hardly ever weight myself anymore. I listen to my body, when I am hungry I eat, I am tired I sleep, I feel sluggish then I know I am not feeding myself well, my clothes feel tighter and the flabs start to show means I am starting to neglect and ignore my self love and self care...

FASTEST SOLUTION TO YOUR IDEAL SIZE...
so I will spring back to do self reflections, admit where I went wrong and get back on track to the "One Second Weight Loss" technique which is "Start Loving Myself" care and nourish myself with the best diet in the world, love, nourish and rest...

Ask Suria Weight Loss Question "Can Rice make Me Fat?"

I got a Weight Loss Question from FB Fren

Suzanah Said asks
"Hey beautiful....I got this problem..of trying to loose weight since last 3 three years, After given birth to my 4th baby last year, I tried to skip rice, it lasted for only 1 month. I can't bare to go wif out rice. Eventually, right now I am on brown rice. It tastes yulky but, it is better than go wif out. Getting used to it now, but the question is...can we eat this brown rice as much as we eat white rice? I mean...the nutritional fact is Brown rice is healthier right? And it can be eaten with the normal lauk that we malays always cook such as ayam lemak cili padi lah..curry ayam lah and all that, right?"

My Answers:

- You can eat rice and still lose weight
- Rice is a carbohyrate that provides energy for the body
- No you won't put on weight by eating rice, you put on weight by too much of food than your body
needs
- Your body slows down its Fat Burning IF you dont eat enough nutrients - Not coz of the rice
- YES Brown Rice is much better than White Rice.. Why?
- Brown Rice has more fibre - Keeps you full longer
- Brown rice has more nutrients coz of being less processed. White Rice is processed so much nutrients
lost during processing
- Brown Rice has more Vitamin B and Vitamin B is important if you want to burn off food you eat
- Brown Rice has good fats, so you will not crave for fried stuff
- Yes you can eat Brown Rice with the Malay lauk2
- I agree the taste is different, but you'll get used to it
- Research has shown women who eats more whole grain foods like brown rice are slimmer

My own Personal Conclusion
- I have a mantra "Brown Rice or No Rice", I do eat White Rice, but very seldom coz I prefer to eat wholemeal bread than rice and for bread I choose wholemeal bread
- I eat my wholemeal bread with lauk-lauk

At the end of the day its also not just what you eat, but how much you eat that is also important : )

Nutrition during the Fasting Month

Dear Slimmers

Its the time of the year again - Ramadan, the blessed fasting month. Its a month of double joy for slimmers too as most look forward to this month to help them in their weight loss targets just in time to slip into the smaller size baju kurung and festive dresses.

A note of caution though. Fasting can make you FAT! Yes, you're not reading it wrong. Fasting is an amazing vehicle for spiritual and physical health if done in the right way. However, if its done the haphazard way then the results can be quite the opposite of what is expected. Most often slimmers who dont do it right end up with double the weight twice as fast as soon as the first week of Syawal hits.

So what is the best method of fasting for total health?
How to fast so that you gain the maximum benefits of fasting and keep slim and maintain your weight during Syawal?

Find out the above and more in the upcoming talk on
"Best Nutrition for the Fasting Month"

Below is an extract of the talk as featured in the Berita Harian:
